THE STORY OF THE PROPHET HUD - Prophet Hud's Da'wah and the Destruction of the Ad

The Prophet Hud was a man of wide-ranging, loving, high-minded, trustworthy, patient, yet intelligent and assertive. His pedigree was Hud ibn Abdullah bin Ribah ibn Khulud ibn Ad bin Aus bin Irim ibn Sam ibn Noah.

The Prophet Hud was sent to his people to re-establish the true teachings of religion. Directing people who are lost and wallowing in sin toward the light of truth that is brightly lit under the forgiveness of Allah SWT. The Prophet Hud gave evidence of the greatness of Allah SWT, namely the majesty of nature created by Allah SWT and all the gifts given to all living beings, especially the Ad. The Prophet Hud invited his people to worship only Allah and leave idols. But the invitation of the Prophet Hud was actually harassed by his people. The Ad people are also surprised that one of their people invites true religion, a religion they do not recognize and does not conform to their customs. The Ad don't want to abandon the old customs, which their customs are wrong. The Ad even dared to revile Prophet Hud. The adulterous acts of Ad are rampant. They did not accept Hud as the messenger of God and even ridiculed him as a fool and crazy. The story of the mission of Hud was explained in several surahs in the Holy Qur'an.

Surah Al-A'raaf verses 65-71:

65.  And to the 'Aad [We sent] their brother Hud. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Then will you not fear Him?"
66.  Said the eminent ones who disbelieved among his people, "Indeed, we see you in foolishness, and indeed, we think you are of the liars."
67.  [Hud] said, "O my people, there is not foolishness in me, but I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds."
68.  I convey to you the messages of my Lord, and I am to you a trustworthy adviser.
69.  Then do you wonder that there has come to you a reminder from your Lord through a man from among you, that he may warn you? And remember when He made you successors after the people of Noah and increased you in stature extensively. So remember the favors of Allah that you might succeed.
70.  They said, "Have you come to us that we should worship Allah alone and leave what our fathers have worshipped? Then bring us what you promise us, if you should be of the truthful."
71.  [Hud] said, "Already have defilement and anger fallen upon you from your Lord. Do you dispute with me concerning [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allah has not sent down any authority? Then wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait."

Surah Hud verses 50-51:

50.  And to 'Aad [We sent] their brother Hud. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. You are not but inventors [of falsehood].
51.  O my people, I do not ask you for it any reward. My reward is only from the one who created me. Then will you not reason?

Surah Al-Mu'minun verse 31-38:

31.  Then We produced after them a generation of others.
32.  And We sent among them a messenger from themselves, [saying], "Worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?"
33.  And the eminent among his people who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter while We had given them luxury in the worldly life said, "This is not but a man like yourselves. He eats of that from which you eat and drinks of what you drink.
34.  And if you should obey a man like yourselves, indeed, you would then be losers.
35.  Does he promise you that when you have died and become dust and bones that you will be brought forth [once more]?
36.  How far, how far, is that which you are promised.
37.  Life is not but our worldly life - we die and live, but we will not be resurrected.
38.  He is not but a man who has invented a lie about Allah, and we will not believe him."

Surah Asy-Syu'ara verses 123-138:

123.  'Aad denied the messengers
124.  When their brother Hud said to them, "Will you not fear Allah?
125.  Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.
126.  So fear Allah and obey me.
127.  And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.
128.  Do you construct on every elevation a sign, amusing yourselves,
129.  And take for yourselves palaces and fortresses that you might abide eternally?
130.  And when you strike, you strike as tyrants.
131.  So fear Allah and obey me.
132.  And fear He who provided you with that which you know,
133.  Provided you with grazing livestock and children
134.  And gardens and springs.
135.  Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day."
136.  They said, "It is all the same to us whether you advise or are not of the advisors.
137.  This is not but the custom of the former peoples,
138.  And we are not to be punished."

Surah Al-Ahqaf verses 21-23:

21.  And mention, [O Muhammad], the brother of 'Aad, when he warned his people in the [region of] al-Ahqaf - and warners had already passed on before him and after him - [saying], "Do not worship except Allah. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day."
22.  They said, "Have you come to delude us away from our gods? Then bring us what you promise us, if you should be of the truthful."
23.  He said, "Knowledge [of its time] is only with Allah, and I convey to you that with which I was sent; but I see you [to be] a people behaving ignorantly."

Allah SWT gives punishment to the Ad for their iniquity. First, the nation of Ad was hit by extreme drought for three years. There was no drop of rain at that time. Their agricultural land and plantations were damaged. Hunger is everywhere. In this situation the Prophet Hud still agreed to warn the Ad people to repent to Allah SWT. But the warning was strongly opposed by the Ad.

Surah Hud verses 52-57:

52.  And O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers and increase you in strength [added] to your strength. And do not turn away, [being] criminals."
53.  They said, "O Hud, you have not brought us clear evidence, and we are not ones to leave our gods on your say-so. Nor are we believers in you.
54.  We only say that some of our gods have possessed you with evil." He said, "Indeed, I call Allah to witness, and witness [yourselves] that I am free from whatever you associate with Allah
55.  Other than Him. So plot against me all together; then do not give me respite.
56.  Indeed, I have relied upon Allah, my Lord and your Lord. There is no creature but that He holds its forelock. Indeed, my Lord is on a path [that is] straight."
57.  But if they turn away, [say], "I have already conveyed that with which I was sent to you. My Lord will give succession to a people other than you, and you will not harm Him at all. Indeed my Lord is, over all things, Guardian."

The people of Ad who want to believe and become followers of Prophet Hud are few. Most remain alive in disbelief and iniquity.

Then, the second or real punishment has arrived. A huge black cloud covered the sky. The Ad thought it was a rainy cloud of blessing after a long period of drought. In fact, that is the punishment that will destroy the ungodly people of the Ad people. Allah SWT saved the Prophet Hud and his believing followers. Whereas the ungodly Ad people were afflicted with doom in the form of very cold and strong winds for seven nights and eight days. The result is terrible. Magnificent and towering buildings collapsed. Farm animals also perish. The unbelievers also perish without remainder. Everything is falling apart. That is the punishment for those who deny Allah's Messenger.

Surah Al-A'raaf verse 72:

72.  So We saved him and those with him by mercy from Us. And We eliminated those who denied Our signs, and they were not [at all] believers.

Surah Hud verses 58-60:

58.  And when Our command came, We saved Hud and those who believed with him, by mercy from Us; and We saved them from a harsh punishment.
59.  And that was 'Aad, who rejected the signs of their Lord and disobeyed His messengers and followed the order of every obstinate tyrant.
60.  And they were [therefore] followed in this world with a curse and [as well] on the Day of Resurrection. Unquestionably, 'Aad denied their Lord; then away with 'Aad, the people of Hud.

Surah Al-Mu'minun verses 39-41:

39.  He said, "My Lord, support me because they have denied me."
40.  [Allah] said, "After a little, they will surely become regretful."
41.  So the shriek seized them in truth, and We made them as [plant] stubble. Then away with the wrongdoing people.

Surah Asy-Syu'ara verses 139-140:

139.  And they denied him, so We destroyed them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
140.  And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

Surah Al-Ahqaf verses 24-25:

24.  And when they saw it as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said, "This is a cloud bringing us rain!" Rather, it is that for which you were impatient: a wind, within it a painful punishment,
25.  Destroying everything by command of its Lord. And they became so that nothing was seen [of them] except their dwellings. Thus do We recompense the criminal people.

Surah Adz-Dzariyat verses 41-42:

41.  And in 'Aad [was a sign], when We sent against them the barren wind.
42.  It left nothing of what it came upon but that it made it like disintegrated ruins.

Surah Al-Qamar verses 18-21:

18.  'Aad denied; and how [severe] were My punishment and warning.
19.  Indeed, We sent upon them a screaming wind on a day of continuous misfortune,
20.  Extracting the people as if they were trunks of palm trees uprooted.
21.  And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

Surah Al-Haqqah verses 6-8:

6.  And as for 'Aad, they were destroyed by a screaming, violent wind
7.  Which Allah imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.
8.  Then do you see of them any remains?
