THE STORY OF THE PROPHET MOSES - The Title, Legacy, and Death of Prophet Moses

Moses had several titles given by Allah SWT, one of which was "God's chosen man", because he was chosen among other humans to bring the message of Allah SWT.

Surah Al-A'raf verse 144:

قَالَ يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِنِّي ٱصۡطَفَيۡتُكَ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ بِرِسَٰلَٰتِي وَبِكَلَٰمِي فَخُذۡ مَآ ءَاتَيۡتُكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلشَّٰكِرِينَ  ١٤٤

144.  [Allah] said, "O Moses, I have chosen you over the people with My messages and My words [to you]. So take what I have given you and be among the grateful."

Moses has the title "kalimullah", because he is a human who speaks directly with Allah SWT. He was also nicknamed "a respectable human being on the side of Allah".

Surah Al-Ahzab verse 69:

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَا تَكُونُواْ كَٱلَّذِينَ ءَاذَوۡاْ مُوسَىٰ فَبَرَّأَهُ ٱللَّهُ مِمَّا قَالُواْۚ وَكَانَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَجِيهٗا  ٦٩

69.  O you who have believed, be not like those who abused Moses; then Allah cleared him of what they said. And he, in the sight of Allah, was distinguished.

Moses also received revelations in the form of the Torah which was revealed by Allah SWT to him. The book contains various guidelines for life and worship.

Surah Al-An'am verse 91:

وَمَا قَدَرُواْ ٱللَّهَ حَقَّ قَدۡرِهِۦٓ إِذۡ قَالُواْ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ بَشَرٖ مِّن شَيۡءٖۗ قُلۡ مَنۡ أَنزَلَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ ٱلَّذِي جَآءَ بِهِۦ مُوسَىٰ نُورٗا وَهُدٗى لِّلنَّاسِۖ تَجۡعَلُونَهُۥ قَرَاطِيسَ تُبۡدُونَهَا وَتُخۡفُونَ كَثِيرٗاۖ وَعُلِّمۡتُم مَّا لَمۡ تَعۡلَمُوٓاْ أَنتُمۡ وَلَآ ءَابَآؤُكُمۡۖ قُلِ ٱللَّهُۖ ثُمَّ ذَرۡهُمۡ فِي خَوۡضِهِمۡ يَلۡعَبُونَ  ٩١

91.  And they did not appraise Allah with true appraisal when they said, "Allah did not reveal to a human being anything." Say, "Who revealed the Scripture that Moses brought as light and guidance to the people? You [Jews] make it into pages, disclosing [some of] it and concealing much. And you were taught that which you knew not - neither you nor your fathers." Say, "Allah [revealed it]." Then leave them in their [empty] discourse, amusing themselves.

Surah Hud verse 110:

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَيۡنَا مُوسَى ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ فَٱخۡتُلِفَ فِيهِۚ وَلَوۡلَا كَلِمَةٞ سَبَقَتۡ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَقُضِيَ بَيۡنَهُمۡۚ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَفِي شَكّٖ مِّنۡهُ مُرِيبٖ  ١١٠

110.  And We had certainly given Moses the Scripture, but it came under disagreement. And if not for a word that preceded from your Lord, it would have been judged between them. And indeed they are, concerning the Qur'an, in disquieting doubt.

Allah SWT also gave a sign of salvation for the Children of Israel in the form of relics of the family of Prophet Moses and Prophet Aaron, namely "Tabut (Chest)" brought by angels, when the Children of Israel were choosing a king for them and Thalut who had been chosen as their king.

Surah Al-Baqarah verse 248:

وَقَالَ لَهُمۡ نَبِيُّهُمۡ إِنَّ ءَايَةَ مُلۡكِهِۦٓ أَن يَأۡتِيَكُمُ ٱلتَّابُوتُ فِيهِ سَكِينَةٞ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ وَبَقِيَّةٞ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ ءَالُ مُوسَىٰ وَءَالُ هَٰرُونَ تَحۡمِلُهُ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَةٗ لَّكُمۡ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ  ٢٤٨

248.  And their prophet said to them, "Indeed, a sign of his kingship is that the chest will come to you in which is assurance from your Lord and a remnant of what the family of Moses and the family of Aaron had left, carried by the angels. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers."

Allah made the history of the Prophet Moses as a lesson for mankind, and Allah SWT advocated telling the history of the Prophet Moses.

Surah Maryam verse 51:

وَٱذۡكُرۡ فِي ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ مُوسَىٰٓۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مُخۡلَصٗا وَكَانَ رَسُولٗا نَّبِيّٗا  ٥١

51.  And mention in the Book, Moses. Indeed, he was chosen, and he was a messenger and a prophet.

There are several hadiths that tell about the death of Prophet Moses. This is one of the saheeh hadiths of the story:

Has told us Hasan: told us Ibn Lahi'ah: told us Abu Yunus: from Abu Hurairah - my father said: "Abu Hurairah did not connect this history to the Prophet Muhammad" - Rasulullah Shalallahu 'alayhi wasalam said: "The angel of death comes to Moses said: 'Fill the call of your Rabb (die)!' But Moses slapped the face of the angel of death and gouged his eyes, so that the angel again turned to Allah 'Azza wa Jalla while saying:' Surely you sent me to a servant from Your servant who do not want death, and he has also gouged my eyes' ". He said: "Then Allah returned his eyes and said:‘ Return to my servant, and tell him: ‘What life do you want? If that is what you want, then put your hand on the fur of the cow skin, then from the fur covered by your hand, each piece of feather will be added one year from your age. 'Moses said:' Then what after that? 'The angel of death replied:' After it is death. 'Moses said:' O Rabb, then now '.' ". (Saheeh hadith in the Book of Musnad Ahmad, number 8262).

According to Ibn Hibban, essentially when the angel of death said this, the Prophet Moses did not know that he was the angel of death, because he came in a unknown form to the Prophet Moses. Therefore, the Prophet Moses struck the death angel to his eyes. At that time the angel of death entered the house of Prophet Moses without his permission.

The Prophet Moses expected various things, including the release of the Children of Israel from the fields of Tiih and entering al-ardh al-muqaddasah. However, Allah SWT predestined that Prophet Moses died in fields of Tiih after the death of Prophet Aaron. When the Prophet Moses chose death, he revealed, "O my Rabb, draw near me with al-ardh al-muqaddasah by being filled with rocks".

The following are the hadiths that tell about the location of the tomb of Moses.

Rasulullah SAW said: "If I were in that place, surely I would show you the grave beside the road near the red hill". (Narrated by Bukhari, saheeh hadith).

Imam Ahmad said: Affan had told us, Hamad had told us, Thabit and Sulaiman at Taimiy had told us, from Anas bin Malik that the Rasulullah SAW said: "When I was on isra', I passed Moses who had prayed in on the tomb near the red hill. " (Narrated by Muslims from the hadith of Hamad bin Salamah).

KISAH NABI MUSA AS. - Gelar, Peninggalan, dan Wafatnya Nabi Musa

Nabi Musa memiliki beberapa gelar yang diberikan oleh Allah SWT, salah satunya adalah “manusia pilihan Allah”, karena beliau dipilih di antara manusia lain untuk membawa risalah Allah SWT.

Surat Al-A'raf ayat 144:

قَالَ يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِنِّي ٱصۡطَفَيۡتُكَ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ بِرِسَٰلَٰتِي وَبِكَلَٰمِي فَخُذۡ مَآ ءَاتَيۡتُكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلشَّٰكِرِينَ  ١٤٤

144.  Allah berfirman: "Hai Musa, sesungguhnya Aku memilih (melebihkan) kamu dan manusia yang lain (di masamu) untuk membawa risalah-Ku dan untuk berbicara langsung dengan-Ku, sebab itu berpegang teguhlah kepada apa yang Aku berikan kepadamu dan hendaklah kamu termasuk orang-orang yang bersyukur".

Nabi Musa memiliki gelar “kalimullah”, karena beliau adalah manusia yang berbicara secara langsung dengan Allah SWT. Beliau juga dijuluki “manusia yang berkedudukan terhormat di sisi Allah”.

Surat Al-Ahzab ayat 69:

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَا تَكُونُواْ كَٱلَّذِينَ ءَاذَوۡاْ مُوسَىٰ فَبَرَّأَهُ ٱللَّهُ مِمَّا قَالُواْۚ وَكَانَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَجِيهٗا  ٦٩

69.  Hai orang-orang yang beriman, janganlah kamu menjadi seperti orang-orang yang menyakiti Musa; maka Allah membersihkannya dari tuduhan-tuduhan yang mereka katakan. Dan adalah dia seorang yang mempunyai kedudukan terhormat di sisi Allah.

Nabi Musa juga mendapat wahyu berupa kitab Taurat yang diturunkan oleh Allah SWT kepadanya. Kitab tersebut berisi berbagai pedoman hidup dan beribadah.

Surat Al-An’am ayat 91:

وَمَا قَدَرُواْ ٱللَّهَ حَقَّ قَدۡرِهِۦٓ إِذۡ قَالُواْ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ بَشَرٖ مِّن شَيۡءٖۗ قُلۡ مَنۡ أَنزَلَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ ٱلَّذِي جَآءَ بِهِۦ مُوسَىٰ نُورٗا وَهُدٗى لِّلنَّاسِۖ تَجۡعَلُونَهُۥ قَرَاطِيسَ تُبۡدُونَهَا وَتُخۡفُونَ كَثِيرٗاۖ وَعُلِّمۡتُم مَّا لَمۡ تَعۡلَمُوٓاْ أَنتُمۡ وَلَآ ءَابَآؤُكُمۡۖ قُلِ ٱللَّهُۖ ثُمَّ ذَرۡهُمۡ فِي خَوۡضِهِمۡ يَلۡعَبُونَ  ٩١

91.  Dan mereka tidak menghormati Allah dengan penghormatan yang semestinya, di kala mereka berkata: "Allah tidak menurunkan sesuatupun kepada manusia". Katakanlah: "Siapakah yang menurunkan kitab (Taurat) yang dibawa oleh Musa sebagai cahaya dan petunjuk bagi manusia, kamu jadikan kitab itu lembaran-lembaran kertas yang bercerai-berai, kamu perlihatkan (sebahagiannya) dan kamu sembunyikan sebahagian besarnya, padahal telah diajarkan kepadamu apa yang kamu dan bapak-bapak kamu tidak mengetahui(nya)?" Katakanlah: "Allah-lah (yang menurunkannya)", kemudian (sesudah kamu menyampaikan Al Quran kepada mereka), biarkanlah mereka bermain-main dalam kesesatannya.

Surat Hud ayat 110:

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَيۡنَا مُوسَى ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ فَٱخۡتُلِفَ فِيهِۚ وَلَوۡلَا كَلِمَةٞ سَبَقَتۡ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَقُضِيَ بَيۡنَهُمۡۚ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَفِي شَكّٖ مِّنۡهُ مُرِيبٖ  ١١٠

110.  Dan sesungguhnya Kami telah memberikan Kitab (Taurat) kepada Musa, lalu diperselisihkan tentang Kitab itu. Dan seandainya tidak ada ketetapan yang telah terdahulu dari Tuhanmu, niscaya telah ditetapkan hukuman di antara mereka. Dan sesungguhnya mereka (orang-orang kafir Mekah) dalam keraguan yang menggelisahkan terhadap Al Quran.

Allah SWT juga memberi pertanda keselamatan bagi Bani Israil berupa benda peninggalan keluarga Nabi Musa dan Nabi Harun, yaitu “Tabut” yang dibawa oleh malaikat, saat Bani Israil sedang memilih raja bagi mereka dan Thalut yang telah terpilih menjadi raja bagi mereka.

Surat Al-Baqarah ayat 248:

وَقَالَ لَهُمۡ نَبِيُّهُمۡ إِنَّ ءَايَةَ مُلۡكِهِۦٓ أَن يَأۡتِيَكُمُ ٱلتَّابُوتُ فِيهِ سَكِينَةٞ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ وَبَقِيَّةٞ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ ءَالُ مُوسَىٰ وَءَالُ هَٰرُونَ تَحۡمِلُهُ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَةٗ لَّكُمۡ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ  ٢٤٨

248.  Dan Nabi mereka mengatakan kepada mereka: "Sesungguhnya tanda ia akan menjadi raja, ialah kembalinya tabut kepadamu, di dalamnya terdapat ketenangan dari Tuhanmu dan sisa dari peninggalan keluarga Musa dan keluarga Harun; tabut itu dibawa malaikat. Sesungguhnya pada yang demikian itu terdapat tanda bagimu, jika kamu orang yang beriman.

Allah menjadikan riwayat Nabi Musa sebagai pelajaran untuk umat manusia, serta Allah SWT menganjurkan agar menceritakan riwayat Nabi Musa.

Surat Maryam ayat 51:

وَٱذۡكُرۡ فِي ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ مُوسَىٰٓۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مُخۡلَصٗا وَكَانَ رَسُولٗا نَّبِيّٗا  ٥١

51.  Dan ceritakanlah (hai Muhammad kepada mereka), kisah Musa di dalam Al Kitab (Al Quran) ini. Sesungguhnya ia adalah seorang yang dipilih dan seorang rasul dan nabi.

Terdapat beberapa hadits yang menceritakan tentang wafatnya Nabi Musa. Ini adalah salah satu hadits shahih tentang kisah tersebut:

Telah menceritakan kepada kami Hasan: telah menceritakan kepada kami Ibnu Lahi’ah: telah menceritakan kepada kami Abu Yunus: dari Abu Hurairah –bapakku berkata: “Abu Hurairah tidak memarfu’kannya” – Rasulullah Shalallahu ‘alayhi wasalam bersabda: “Malaikat maut datang kepada Musa seraya berkata: ‘Penuhilah panggilan Rabbmu (mati)!’ namun Musa menampar muka malaikat maut dan mencongkel matanya, sehingga malaikat tersebut kembali menghadap kepada Allah ‘Azza wa Jalla seraya berkata: ‘Sesungguhnya Engkau telah mengutusku kepada seorang hamba dari hamba-Mu yang tidak menginginkan kematian, dan dia juga telah mencongkel mataku’”. Beliau bersabda: “Lalu Allah mengembalikan matanya dan berfirman: ‘Kembalilah kepada hamba-Ku, dan katakanlah kepadanya: ‘Apakah kehidupan yang engkau inginkan? Jika itu yang kamu inginkan, maka letakkanlah tanganmu ke atas bulu kulit lembu, maka dari bulu yang tertutup oleh tanganmu, setiap helai bulu akan ditambah satu tahun dari umurmu.’ Musa berkata: ‘Lalu apa setelah itu?’ malaikat maut menjawab: ‘Setelah itu kematian.’ Musa berkata: ‘Wahai Rabb, kalau begitu sekarang saja’.’”. (Hadits shahih di dalam Kitab Musnad Ahmad, nomor ke-8262).

Dalam hadits di atas, yang dimaksud “tidak memarfu’kannya” adalah tidak menyambungkan riwayat ini kepada Nabi Muhammad SAW.

Menurut Ibnu Hibban, intinya ketika malaikat maut mengatakan hal tersebut, Nabi Musa tidak mengetahui bahwa dia adalah malaikat maut, karena dia datang dalam rupa yang tidak dikenal oleh Nabi Musa. Oleh sebab itu, Nabi Musa menempeleng malaikat maut itu hingga keluar matanya. Saat itu malaikat maut masuk ke rumah Nabi Musa tanpa seizinnya.

Nabi Musa mengharapkan berbagai hal, diantaranya adalah keluarnya Bani Israil dari padang Tiih dan masuk ke al-ardh Al-muqaddasah. Namun, Allah SWT telah menakdirkan bahwa Nabi Musa meninggal di padang Tiih setelah wafatnya Nabi Harun. Ketika Nabi Musa memilih kematian, beliau mengungkapkan, “Wahai Rabbku, dekatkanlah diriku dengan al-ardh al-muqaddasah dengan ditimbuni dengan bebatuan”.

Berikut ini adalah hadits-hadits yang menceritakan tentang lokasi makam Nabi Musa.

Rasulullah SAW bersabda:”Sekiranya aku berada di tempat itu, niscaya aku akan memperlihatkan kepada kalian kuburnya di samping jalan di dekat bukit merah”. (Hadits Riwayat Bukhari, hadits shahih).

Imam Ahmad berkata: Affan telah menceritakan kepada kami, Hamad telah menceritakan kepada kami, Tsabit dan Sulaiman at Taimiy telah menceritakan kepada kami, dari Anas bin Malik bahwasanya Rasulullah SAW bersabda: “Ketika aku diisra’kan, maka aku melewati Musa yang telah shalat di atas kuburnya di dekat bukit merah”. (Diriwayatkan oleh Muslim dari hadits Hamad bin Salamah).
