THE STORY OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD - The Story of Umar bin Khattab Entering Islam

There was someone who at first was very hard on Islam, but then he got a light so he converted to Islam. He is Umar bin Khattab. He converted to Islam in the 6th year of Prophethood, three days after Hamzah bin Abdul Muttalib converted to Islam. This can happen because the Messenger of Allah had indeed prayed to Allah SWT so that he entered Islam, "O Allah, glorify Islam with one of the two people you love more, namely Umar bin Khattab or Abu Jahal bin Hisham".

Then Allah SWT granted his prayer by choosing Umar bin Khattab, whom Allah loved more than both.

Umar bin Khattab was a man who was manly and hard-mannered, At that time, aged between thirty and thirty-five years. He often gets angry quickly, but is wise and gentle towards the family. When he had not converted to Islam, he often behaved harshly towards the Muslims. Actually Umar felt that in his heart the feelings that were often raging, between maintaining the teachings of the ancestors he had embraced from a long time ago, the aversion to entertainment and drunkenness, with his admiration for the firmness of the faith of the Muslims and his heart feeling that the teachings of Prophet Muhammad may have been better and more noble than the habits of Quraysh ignorance. When some Muslims migrated to Habasyah and the king gave them protection, Umar felt sad because he separated from them.

Until one day, Umar set foot with a sword to attack Prophet Muhammad. But Abdullah an Nahham Al ‘Adawi stopped Umar's steps in the road while asking," Where do you want to go, O Umar? "

"I will kill Muhammad", replied Umar.

"Will you be safe from Banu Hashim and Banu Zuhroh if you kill Muhammad?"

"Do you think you have left your old religion?", Asked Umar.

"Do you want to show what is more surprising than that, O Umar, that your sister (who named Fatimah) and her husband have left the old religion," Abdullah said.

Umar was surprised to hear that and immediately went to his sister's house in a state of anger. At Fatimah's house and her husband there was Khabbab bin Art who was teaching the Qur'an to both of them. Khabbab sensed that Umar arrived at Fatimah's house, so he hid behind the house. Then Fatimah immediately covered the Qur'an.

Before entering the house, it turned out that Umar had heard the Khabbab reading, then he asked, "What did I hear from you?"

They replied, "There was no sound except the chat we were alone."

"You must have left your old religion," Umar said angrily.

Fatimah's husband named Said bin Zaid said, "O Umar, what do you think if the truth is not in your religion?"

Umar was getting angry when he heard it and immediately kicked Fatimah's husband hard until he fell and bled. Fatimah immediately woke her husband, but she was also slapped hard until her face bled. Fatimah also said to Umar, "O Umar, if the truth is not in your religion, then I testify that there is no God worshiped other than Allah, and I testify that Prophet Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah".

Umar felt embarrassed and regretful for making his sister bleed. Complaints of compassion for his sister. Then he asked for the Qur'an. But Fatimah refused and said that Umar was still unclean, and the Qur'an could only be touched by those who had been purified. Umar was told to take a bath by Fatimah if he wanted to touch the Qur'an, then Umar did it.

After taking a bath, Umar read the contents of the Qur'an, "Bismillahirrahmanirrahim". Then he responded, "These are beautiful and holy names".

Then he continued reading:

طه  ١ [ طه:1]

1.  Ta, Ha. [Ta Ha:1]

Until verse:

14.  Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance. [Ta Ha:14]

Umar's heart felt trembling after reading the verses. He felt something great and extraordinary from the sentences he read.

He commented, "How beautiful and glorious these sentences are. Show me where Muhammad is".

Then Khabbab bin Art came out from behind the house and said, "Cheer up O Umar, I hope that the prayer of Prophet Muhammad was for you. This is his prayer, 'Allah O Allah, glorify Islam with one of the two people who are more loving, Umar bin Khattab or Abu Jahal bin Hisham'. Now the Messenger of Allah is in a house at the foot of the Shafa hill".

So Umar immediately went to the house carrying a sword. Now his heart began to feel calm and confident in the truth. When he got there, he knocked on the door. Someone who was in it tried to peek through the crack of the door, seen that Umar bin Khattab was carrying a sword. He told Rasulullah and everyone gathered. Hamzah asked, "What's wrong?"

They answered, "There is Umar".

"Umar? Open the door for him, if he comes to bring goodness, we welcome. But if he comes with evil, kill him with his own sword".

Rasulullah signaled that Hamzah meet Umar. Then Hamzah immediately met Umar and told him to meet Rasulullah. Then Rasulullah held Umar's shirt with the handle of his sword, then pulled and said, "O Omar, will you continue this way until the humiliation of the punishment of Allah is revealed to you as it happened to Walid bin Mughirah? O Allah, this is Umar bin Khattab, O Allah, establish Islam with Umar bin Khattab ".

Umar said, "I bear witness that there is no God worshiped other than Allah, and You are the Messenger of Allah".

The people in the house echoed the takbir echo to greet Umar's statement that he had converted to Islam, even their voice was heard until the Grand Mosque (Masjidil Haram). There was a stir in the polytheists, whereas the Muslims welcomed him with joy. Ibn Masud said, "We did not dare to pray before the Kaaba until Umar entered Islam".

Now the position of the Muslims is getting stronger and the strength of Quraysh has diminished.
