Imran was a scholar who was pious among the Children
of Israel. He has a wife named Hanna, brother-in-law of the Prophet Zechariah (Zakariya).
Imran is very old, while Hanna is a barren woman. They have not obtained
children so that their lives feel lonely and boring. They crave children who
can provide happiness in married life, solace, and strengthen the life of
husband and wife. When Hanna saw a mother carrying her baby or when a bird fed
her child, she felt like having children and imagined being able to care for and
care for children like them.
As time went on, the age of the couple increased.
Although old, the desire to have children never came true. Various ways have
been done and various other people's advice has also been tried, but without
success. Finally they realized that only Allah SWT had the power to grant their
wish and was able to present a child even though they were old and gray. So
they always pray both day and night in earnest and full of humility.
Their hopes have come true by the grace of Allah SWT.
Allah SWT grew a fetus in the womb of Hanna and according to Allah's destiny
that their descendants would give birth to a great Prophet. They give thanks to
Allah SWT and try to look after their fetus properly and correctly. They
promised to surrender their children to become servants in Baitul Maqdis who
would look after and maintain the holy house. They also will not take benefits
from their children for personal gain.
Surah Ali Imran verse 35:
إِذۡ
قَالَتِ ٱمۡرَأَتُ عِمۡرَٰنَ رَبِّ إِنِّي نَذَرۡتُ لَكَ مَا فِي بَطۡنِي
مُحَرَّرٗا فَتَقَبَّلۡ مِنِّيٓۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ ٣٥
35. [Mention, O Muhammad], when the wife of
'Imran said, "My Lord, indeed I have pledged to You what is in my womb,
consecrated [for Your service], so accept this from me. Indeed, You are the
Hearing, the Knowing."
Hanna began to feel signs of pregnancy, it is the
movement of the fetus in her womb that continued to grow. Imran and Hanna are
happy because soon they will have a child that makes the life of the household
more beautiful. When they sit together, they continue to talk about pregnancy
and the baby to be born.
However, Imran who was very and loved by his wife
and was expected to receive his first child and accompany her at the time of
giving birth, it was determined that he died before the birth of his child.
Hanna was left in a state of old pregnancy, even though at that moment the
presence of the husband was highly expected. Hanna felt sad and increasingly
tired because her stomach was getting heavier in the period before birth.
Then Hanna gave birth to a baby who was healthy. The
baby was present in the world and breathes fresh air. Hanna was a little
disappointed when she learned that her baby was female, even though she
expected a boy who could become a servant at Baitul Maqdis. With a sad voice she
looked up at the sky and said that she had given birth to a daughter named
Mary, even though she had vowed to hand her over to Baitul Maqdis. So Allah SWT
replied that her daughter would become a noble woman and have an important
position in Baitul Maqdis.
Surah Ali Imran:
فَلَمَّا
وَضَعَتۡهَا قَالَتۡ رَبِّ إِنِّي وَضَعۡتُهَآ أُنثَىٰ وَٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا
وَضَعَتۡ وَلَيۡسَ ٱلذَّكَرُ كَٱلۡأُنثَىٰۖ وَإِنِّي سَمَّيۡتُهَا مَرۡيَمَ
وَإِنِّيٓ أُعِيذُهَا بِكَ وَذُرِّيَّتَهَا مِنَ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنِ ٱلرَّجِيمِ ٣٦ فَتَقَبَّلَهَا رَبُّهَا بِقَبُولٍ حَسَنٖ
وَأَنۢبَتَهَا نَبَاتًا حَسَنٗا وَكَفَّلَهَا زَكَرِيَّاۖ .... ٣٧
36. But when she delivered her, she said,
"My Lord, I have delivered a female." And Allah was most knowing of
what she delivered, "And the male is not like the female. And I have named
her Mary, and I seek refuge for her in You and [for] her descendants from
Satan, the expelled [from the mercy of Allah]."
37. So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance
and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of
Zechariah....
When Mary was handed over to the administrators of
Baitul Maqdis, the monks scrambled to be appointed as caregivers responsible
for supervising and caring for Mary who was Imran's daughter, a good man, and
Hanna's daughter, a woman who prayed. Then a draw is conducted to determine who
is the caregiver. The chosen person is Zechariah who is in accordance with
Allah SWT's promise to Hanna. Zechariah was happy because he can take care of
Hanna and Imran's daughter. He immediately took care of Mary by keeping her
away from the crowds around and from people who wanted to visit her. Maryam was
placed in a safe room in the Baitul Maqdis neighborhood.
