Noah (Nuh) was the third
Prophet in Islam (the order of 25 Prophets) after Prophet Adam and Prophet
Idris. Noah was the ninth descendant of Prophet Adam. The name Noah was
mentioned 43 times in the Qur'an.
Noah (Nuh) was appointed
as a prophet in the time of emptiness between the two prophets. During this
emptiness most humans slowly began to forget the teachings of the religion of
Allah SWT and made polytheism, abandoning virtue, doing crime and immorality
because of being influenced by demon persuasion. Noah was sent among the people
who worshiped idols, the statues they made themselves. According to them the
idol has supernatural powers over humans. The names of idols vary, such as
Wadd, Suwa', Yaguth, Ya'uq, and Nasr. Actually it is the name of righteous people.
Described in the Surah Nuh verse 23:
23. And said, 'Never leave your gods and never
leave Wadd or Suwa' or Yaghuth and Ya'uq and Nasr.
The people at that time had formed a community and
initially they lived their lives simply. They farm and hunt animals to make
ends meet. Over time, strong people use their strength so that they oppress
their weak brothers. Those who are weak are afraid of the strong and they must
live their lives in humiliation and oppression. Noah (Nuh) saw that life form
that happened in his environment.
Noah (Nuh) saw that his people had lived a life full
of evil and deviated from the truth. The strong always torture the weak. They
forget to worship Allah SWT. They worship idols that they think can bestow
blessings on them or protect them from disaster and evil. Of course this makes
Noah feel sad to see his people live in digression. He also prayed to Allah SWT
to save his people from ignorance.
Noah (Nuh) invited his people to think about how
great the universe created by Allah SWT. The sky that has the moon, stars and
sun. All the natural wealth of the earth both above and below it, namely
animals, plants, and running water. Substitution day and night. All of that is
proof of the power, greatness, and oneness of Allah SWT. He reminded that the
idols they worshiped have no power whatsoever. He invited his people to only
worship Allah SWT. Noah also gave news to his people, namely rewards in the
form of heaven for people who do good deeds and hell for people who live in
disasters and immorality.
Unbelievers were surprised by the words of Noah.
They wondered why someone would dare to insult their idols.
Noah preached diligently day and night, both
secretly and openly. Noah is a smart, fluent person, sharp in his thoughts,
good at discussing, patient and calm. Noah was appointed an Messenger at the
age of 450 years and died at the age of 950 years, which means that for five
centuries Noah preached to his people so that they headed the right path. Even
so, Noah only had fewer than one hundred followers.
Many of the people of Noah (Nuh) were broken. If
Noah invited to worship Allah and uphold monotheism, then his people always
taunted him. Most of the followers of Noah were poor. Nobles, rich people and
dignitaries are hostile to it. They hated the call and words of Noah. In
preaching, Noah always said that he did not take any wages from his people, he
sincerely invited the truth. He only wants to uphold justice and brotherhood.
At one time the infidels met Noah and said that they
wanted to become followers of Noah if the poor people of Noah followers were
expelled. Of course Noah refused the trick of the rich people. Noah really
carried out the task to invite his people to follow the teachings of Allah SWT,
if he obeyed the request of the infidels, of course Noah missed his duty. For
him, all humans have the same degree before God.
The intelligence and fluency possessed by Noah (Nuh)
defeated all the disobedience of infidels. Unbelievers who were annoyed felt
revenge on Noah.
Unbelievers so deny the teachings of Allah SWT. They
mocked and insulted Noah as a fool and a madman. The infidels always thought
why the people who were their messenger were just ordinary people among them,
not angels. Noah remained steadfast and patient and continued to carry out his
prophetic duties. The infidels increasingly opposed Noah and even threatened
him.
Although always insulted and many attempts failed,
Noah continued to love his people. He wanted to guide them to the truth. He
does not want his people to die in infidels. He is always patient every day.
Among all his children, there is one who does not believe.
The following is the story of Prophet Noah preaching
contained in the Holy Qur'an.
Sura Al-A'raaf verses 59-62:
59. We had certainly sent Noah to his people, and
he said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him.
Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous Day.
60. Said the eminent among his people,
"Indeed, we see you in clear error."
61. [Noah] said, "O my people, there is not
error in me, but I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds."
62. I convey to you the messages of my Lord and
advise you; and I know from Allah what you do not know.
Yunus verses 71-72:
71. And recite to them the news of Noah, when he
said to his people, "O my people, if my residence and my reminding of the
signs of Allah has become burdensome upon you - then I have relied upon Allah.
So resolve upon your plan and [call upon] your associates. Then let not your
plan be obscure to you. Then carry it out upon me and do not give me respite.
72. And if you turn away [from my advice] then no
payment have I asked of you. My reward is only from Allah, and I have been
commanded to be of the Muslims."
Hud verses 25-35:
25. And We had certainly sent Noah to his people,
[saying], "Indeed, I am to you a clear warner
26. That you not worship except Allah. Indeed, I
fear for you the punishment of a painful day."
27. So the eminent among those who disbelieved
from his people said, "We do not see you but as a man like ourselves, and
we do not see you followed except by those who are the lowest of us [and] at
first suggestion. And we do not see in you over us any merit; rather, we think
you are liars."
28. He said, "O my people have you
considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord while He has given
me mercy from Himself but it has been made unapparent to you, should we force it
upon you while you are averse to it?
29. And O my people, I ask not of you for it any
wealth. My reward is not but from Allah. And I am not one to drive away those
who have believed. Indeed, they will meet their Lord, but I see that you are a
people behaving ignorantly.
30. And O my people, who would protect me from
Allah if I drove them away? Then will you not be reminded?
31. And I do not tell you that I have the
depositories [containing the provision] of Allah or that I know the unseen, nor
do I tell you that I am an angel, nor do I say of those upon whom your eyes
look down that Allah will never grant them any good. Allah is most knowing of
what is within their souls. Indeed, I would then be among the wrongdoers."
32. They said, "O Noah, you have disputed us
and been frequent in dispute of us. So bring us what you threaten us, if you
should be of the truthful."
33. He said, "Allah will only bring it to
you if He wills, and you will not cause [Him] failure.
34. And my advice will not benefit you - although
I wished to advise you - If Allah should intend to put you in error. He is your
Lord, and to Him you will be returned."
35. Or do they say [about Prophet Muhammad],
"He invented it"? Say, "If I have invented it, then upon me is
[the consequence of] my crime; but I am innocent of what [crimes] you
commit."
Sura Al-Mu'minun verses 23-25:
23. And We had certainly sent Noah to his people,
and he said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than
Him; then will you not fear Him?"
24. But the eminent among those who disbelieved
from his people said, "This is not but a man like yourselves who wishes to
take precedence over you; and if Allah had willed [to send a messenger], He
would have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our forefathers.
25. He is not but a man possessed with madness,
so wait concerning him for a time."
Ash-Shu'ara verse 105-116:
105. The people of Noah denied the messengers
106. When their brother Noah said to them,
"Will you not fear Allah?
107. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.
108. So fear Allah and obey me.
109. And I do not ask you for it any payment. My
payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.
110. So fear Allah and obey me."
111. They said, "Should we believe you while
you are followed by the lowest [class of people]?"
112. He said, "And what is my knowledge of
what they used to do?
113. Their account is only upon my Lord, if you
[could] perceive.
114. And I am not one to drive away the believers.
115. I am only a clear warner."
116. They said, "If you do not desist, O
Noah, you will surely be of those who are stoned."
Nuh verse 1-20:
1. Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, [saying],
"Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment."
2. He said, "O my people, indeed I am to
you a clear warner,
3. [Saying], 'Worship Allah, fear Him and obey
me.
4. Allah will forgive you of your sins and delay
you for a specified term. Indeed, the time [set by] Allah, when it comes, will
not be delayed, if you only knew.' "
5. He said, "My Lord, indeed I invited my
people [to truth] night and day.
6. But my invitation increased them not except
in flight.
7. And indeed, every time I invited them that
You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves
with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with [great] arrogance.
8. Then I invited them publicly.
9. Then I announced to them and [also] confided
to them secretly
10. And said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord.
Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.
11. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in
[continuing] showers
12. And give you increase in wealth and children
and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.
13. What is [the matter] with you that you do not
attribute to Allah [due] grandeur
14. While He has created you in stages?
15. Do you not consider how Allah has created
seven heavens in layers
16. And made the moon therein a [reflected] light
and made the sun a burning lamp?
17. And Allah has caused you to grow from the
earth a [progressive] growth.
18. Then He will return you into it and extract
you [another] extraction.
19. And Allah has made for you the earth an
expanse
20. That you may follow therein roads of
passage.' "
Then, Allah ordered Noah (Nuh) to make a large ark
with his followers. One day, water emanated from the ground and it rained
heavily. Noah and his faithful followers ascended to the ark to save
themselves. Noah also raised animals in pairs on the ark. So the floods soaked
the whole land. The infidels also perished, including one of the sons of Noah
(Kan'an). Everything on the ark is safe, until the flood recedes. The ark
anchored on Mount Judi and they were grateful and started a new life.
