When
the Messenger of Allah (Rasulullah) was 35 years old, the Quraysh were doing a
restoration of the Kaaba which had been damaged because of the age of the
building which was very old and also flooded. The flood came down from the hills
and cracked the fragile walls of the Kaaba. Previously, the Quraysh had thought
about restoring the Kaaba, because the building was not roofed so that
valuables in it were often stolen. But they are afraid that if the building is
strengthened, the door is elevated, and given a roof, the holy "god"
will bring disaster to them.
But
after the flood hit Mecca, it was imperative that the Kaaba be repaired even
though they were still hesitant and worried. At the same time, a ship belonging
to a Roman merchant named Baqum who came from Egypt was crashed on the sea and
damaged. Actually Baqum is a building expert who is also good at trading. When
the Quraysh learned about this, Al-Walid bin Al-Mughira and several people from
Quraysh left for Jeddah, where Baqum's ship was located. They bought the ship
and asked Baqum to go to Mecca with them to help restore the Kaaba. Baqum
agreed to their request. At that time in Mecca there was a Coptic who had
expertise as a carpenter. He also collaborated with Baqum's assistance.
Because
the Kaaba was a sacred building that was glorified by the Quraysh and pilgrims,
the Quraysh agreed that the cost of restoration only came from halal (clean)
property. They do not use funds from the results of disobedience, usury, and
the result of tyrannizing other parties. At first, they demolished the old
Kaaba building. Al-Walid bin Al Mughira was the first person to overhaul the
Kaaba after praying to "gods". People are waiting for what the
"great god" will do to Al-Walid. After being sure that nothing had
happened, they were busy overhauling it and then transporting rocks for
development. Muhammad also participated in the activity. They divided the
implementation of the Kaaba development for each tribe so that it was more
organized and effective.
When
the building of the Kaaba until when it was about to put Hajar Aswad, each
tribe began to dispute about who had the right to put the sacred stone in its
position. All are scrambling to do it because it is a great pride and honor.
Conflict continued and almost bloodshed occurred around the Kaaba. Abd'd-Dar
family and 'Adi family agreed not to let
any tribe participate in this great honor. They lifted the oath together.
Abd'd-Dar's family carried a tray filled with blood. Their hands were put in the
blood to strengthen their oath. This oath is called La'aqat Ad-Dam.
Finally,
a person named Abu Umayyah bin Mughiroh Al-Makhzumi proposed that this decision
be left to the person who first entered the Kaaba neighborhood from the door of
Safa. The dispute subsided and they agreed.
Allah
SWT has arranged that the first to enter the Kaaba environment is Muhammad.
When he saw his presence, they immediately said, "That's Al-Amin, we are
willing if he decides, he is Muhammad".
They
presented the matter to Muhammad and asked for a solution. So he asked for a
piece of cloth, then Hajar Aswad was placed in the middle of the cloth and he
asked each head of the tribe to lift the cloth. They brought the cloth together
to the place where Hajar Aswad was placed. When their position and the cloth
had approached the Kaaba, Muhammad took Hajar Aswad from the cloth and placed
it in his position. All parties have been relieved and satisfied with resolving
the right problem. And finally the Kaaba was completed and stood upright.
