Circumcision is the act of cutting or removing part
or all of the skin of the front cover of the male genitals. The word
circumcision means to cut. Circumcision is a means of self-purification and
proof of submission to the teachings of Islam.
In the hadith, Prophet Muhammad SAW said,
"There are five purities (fitrah): circumcision, shaving the pubic hair,
pulling the armpit hair, shortening the mustache and cutting the nails."
(H.R. Bukhari Muslim).
When Prophet Abraham was ninety years old and
Prophet Ishmael was thirteen years old, Allah SWT gave orders to perform
circumcision. That said, Prophet Abraham used axes in the circumcision process.
This circumcision continued to be carried out by the Prophets after them,
including the teachings of Prophet Isa AS (Prophet Jesus) and the Prophet
Muhammad SAW.
Surah Al-Baqarah verse 136:
قُولُوٓاْ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ
وَمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيۡنَا وَمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَىٰٓ إِبۡرَٰهِۧمَ وَإِسۡمَٰعِيلَ
وَإِسۡحَٰقَ وَيَعۡقُوبَ وَٱلۡأَسۡبَاطِ وَمَآ أُوتِيَ مُوسَىٰ وَعِيسَىٰ وَمَآ
أُوتِيَ ٱلنَّبِيُّونَ مِن رَّبِّهِمۡ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيۡنَ أَحَدٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ
وَنَحۡنُ لَهُۥ مُسۡلِمُونَ ١٣٦
136. Say, [O believers], "We have believed in
Allah and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Abraham
and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants and what was given to Moses
and Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no
distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [in submission] to
Him."
For Muslims, circumcision is about maintaining the
cleanliness of male reproductive organs. According to medical science,
circumcision is beneficial to health because it removes parts of the body that
become a hiding place for dirt, unclean, viruses, and unpleasant odors. Urine
contains all these things. When the urine exits through the skin of the front
cover, some of the sediment will be retained by the skin. The longer the
deposit will accumulate. Because of this, circumcision prevents a person from
developing venereal disease. According to several medical studies, more people
with venereal disease come from people who are not circumcised.
The mandatory time for circumcision is at the time
of baligh, because it is mandatory to pray. Without circumcision, prayer is not
perfect because one of the legitimate conditions of prayer is sacred. There is
a time when the sunnah of circumcision is before baligh.
