Prophet
Abraham had two wives, namely Sarah and Hajar. Hajar has given birth to a son
named Ishmael. Ishmael means "Allah has heard", because Allah has
granted the prayer of Prophet Abraham to have children, and he is blessed with Ishmael.
Sarah
felt unhappy to live with Hajar. Sarah often asked her husband so that Hajar
and her child would be moved to another place. Prophet Abraham did not
immediately follow Sarah's request. Then Allah SWT gave instructions to Prophet
Abraham. Hajar and Ishmael were invited by Prophet Abraham to go to Mecca.
Ishmael
at that time was still breastfeeding and he had to join his parents to travel
far. Then they arrived at a hot, dry and barren place. The place is a desert of
silence, the heat of the sun stings the skin. Then Abraham left Hajar and
Ishmael in that place. Nobody was there except the two of them.
Hajar
and Ishmael must accept the fate that Allah SWT has predestined with patience
and confidence that Allah SWT will always protect. Their supplies were run out,
while there were no springs around them. Start their lives to be heavy. Ishmael
felt thirsty. He cried because he couldn't stand thirst.
"Be
patient my dear baby, your mother will look for water around here for you."
said Hajar. Then Hajar looked for water while running as best he could.
"Lord,
help your servant, who is tired, weak and thirsty."
Hajar
ran to Shafa Hill but found no water. Then go down and run towards the Marwah
hill, there is also no water. Because of the urge to survive and love his
children, Hajar ran between the hill of Shafa and the Marwah hill up to seven
times.
"Be
patient, my son ..." said Hajar.
Suddenly
there was a man who was not far from Ishmael and came over. He set his foot
firmly on the ground and out of the traces came clear water that was radiant
and abundant. That happened with the power of Allah SWT.
Hajar
ran to the water source and took the water. Then Hajar and Ishmael were not
thirsty and felt refreshed.
It
turned out that the man was the angel Gabriel. So that the water doesn't
overflow he says "Zam-Zam! Zam-Zam!" means to gather. Then the water
gathered into a spring and is now known as the Zam-Zam well.
Before
the angel Gabriel left, he told Hajar, "O Hajar! Don't worry if the water
runs out. This water source is not only for people here, but also for God's
guests. And this child's father will build the house of God in this
place."
God's
guests mean the people who carry out the pilgrimage, and the house of God means
the Kaaba. Indeed, the former journey of Hajar, Abraham and Ishmael until now
is used as a pilgrimage.
The
existence of this Zam-Zam well made desert birds come to the well. They flew
around the well, attracting the attention of the caravans who passed the place.
They know from experience that where there are birds flying in the air, it
means there is water underneath. They checked the place and then they moved to
that place. More and more people came and settled around the well with Hajar
and Ishmael.
Hajar
and Ishmael were considered to be the owners of the place so that they were
highly respected by immigrants from the Jurhum tribe. They ask permission first
before taking Zam-Zam water and settling around the Zam-Zam well. Hajar was
thankful to Allah SWT because he had many neighbors and the place was
originally quiet to be a crowded place.
Surat
Ibrahim verse 39:
39. Praise to Allah, who has granted to me in old
age Ishmael and Isaac. Indeed, my Lord is the Hearer of supplication.
