THE STORY OF THE PROPHET ELISHA

Prophet Elisha is the son of the Safet and the successor of the Prophet Elias. Prophet Elisha is the next Prophet who preached to the Children of Israel so that they carry out the commands and stay away from the prohibition of Allah SWT.

Ilyasa's name (Elisha) is only mentioned twice in the Holy Qur'an with other prophets. There is not much explanation about him. However, he was a noble prophet.

Surah Al-An'am verse 86:

وَإِسۡمَٰعِيلَ وَٱلۡيَسَعَ وَيُونُسَ وَلُوطٗاۚ وَكُلّٗا فَضَّلۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ  ٨٦

86.  And Ishmael and Elisha and Jonah and Lot - and all [of them] We preferred over the worlds.

Surah Shad verse 48:

وَٱذۡكُرۡ إِسۡمَٰعِيلَ وَٱلۡيَسَعَ وَذَا ٱلۡكِفۡلِۖ وَكُلّٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَخۡيَارِ  ٤٨

48.  And remember Ishmael, Elisha and Dhul-Kifl, and all are among the outstanding.

He faced an attitude of dislike and opposition from the King and Queen of Israel to the religion taught by the Prophet Elias. Prophet Elisha showed many miracles to show evidence of the truth and power of Allah SWT. But those infidels were even more opposed and insulted Prophet Elisha, even he was called a sorcerer. This is the same as the events experienced by the Prophet Elias when preaching. They continue to defy the invitation of Prophet Elisha.

After a while, the Israelites were conquered by the Assyrians. The Assyrians also destroyed the Mount Temple and caused severe damage in Israel.

Ilyasa's (Elisha) name is referred to in the story of the Prophet Elias, when the Messenger was chased by his lawless people and he hid in Elisha's house. From these events, it is likely that Elisha lives around the Jordan river valley.

When Elias hid in his house, Elisha was still young and sick. So the Prophet Elias tried to heal Elisha. With a gift from Allah SWT, Elisha has healed and he became the adopted son of the Prophet Elias who always helps and accompanies in preaching towards the path of goodness. Then Elisha continued the prophetic task and the struggle of the Prophet Elias who was dead. Prophet Elisha taught the teachings brought by his adoptive father so that his people returned obedient to the commands of Allah SWT.

Prophet Elisha saw that it turned out that humans were so easily back on the path of being misguided. That happened shortly after Elias died. Though the Jordanian river valley community had followed the teachings of the Prophet Elias to leave worship of idols. But Prophet Elisha remains passionate and persistent in inviting his people to the path of truth. It is said that the infidels still did not want to hear and follow the teachings of Prophet Elisha. So Allah SWT brought disaster to them, it is the extraordinary and very long dry season.
