There are several versions of the cause of the death
of Prophet Yahya (John). Basically, all versions almost have the same core. The
most famous is that there was one of the kings at the time of Prophet Yahya who
was about to marry a woman who was forbidden to marry by him. So Prophet Yahya
forbade the king from doing this. The desire of the king was forbidden in the
shari'a of the holy book. The king's prospective wife felt displeased with
Prophet Yahya. The king really loved the prospective wife, so he promised to
provide something that the prospective wife wanted. So the woman asked for the
blood of Prophet Yahya. So the king ordered the people to kill Prophet Yahya.
Something bad happened. They carried his head and blood in a vessel. That said,
the prospective wife perished immediately.
There is another opinion, that the king's
prospective wife likes Prophet Yahya (John) but Yahya rejects her. The woman
felt disappointed, so she planned to persuade the king to kill Prophet Yahya.
Actually the king refused the request. But because of the insistence of the
prospective wife, the king finally wanted to obey the request. The king ordered
his subordinates to kill Prophet Yahya and bring his head and blood in a
vessel.
According to various versions, the king was named
Hirodus who was a Roman king who also controlled Palestine and Syria. It was
said that he was a king who lived in luxury and was drunk. That said, he obeyed
the request of the woman he loved after drinking liquor at a party. Whereas the
woman who wants to marry is his stepdaughter, she is his wife's child from a
previous marriage. There is also the opinion that the woman is the wife of
Hirodus's brother .
There are two big opinions among the scholars
regarding the place where Prophet Yahya (John) was killed, in the Aqsa Mosque
or elsewhere.
The following are some of the opinions of scholars:
Ats-Tsauriy said from Al A'masy from Syamr bin
‘Athiyah, he said," There are seventy Prophets who were killed in Shakhr
(rock) who were inside Baitul Maqdis, including Yahya ibn Zakaria. "
Abu "Ubaid Al Qasim bin Salaam said,"
Abdullah bin Shalih had told us, from Al Laits from Yahya bin Sa'id from Sa'id
bin Al Musayyab, he said, "Bukhtanashr came to Damascus and found the
blood of Yahya bin Zakaria being boil. He asked about him, so they told him.
Then Bukhtanashr killed 70,000 people instead ".". This history is
saheeh to Sa'id bin Al Musayyab. This shows that Prophet Yahya died in the city
of Damascus, while the story of Bukhtanashr is found after the period of the
Messiah, as revealed by Hasan Al Bashri. Wallahu A'lam.
Al Hafizh Ibn Asakir narrated from the Al Walid Bani
Israil Muslim line , from Zaid bin Al Waqid, he said, "I once saw the head
of Yahya bin Zakaria when people wanted to build a Damascus mosque. The head is
removed from one of the angles of the Qibla which is adjacent to the Mihrab
which leads to the east. His skin and hair are still as they are and have not
changed ". In a history it is said: As if he had just been killed. It was
mentioned in connection with the construction of the Damascus mosque that the
head of Prophet Yahya was under one of the pillars of the mosque that known as
the "as Sakasakah". Wallahu A'lam.
What is clear, from various stories mentioned that
Prophet Yahya (John) was martyred for defending the truth of religious
teachings. He dared to oppose tyranny even though his enemy was a person in
power. Ibn Wahb said: "Ibn Luhai'ah had told me, from‘ Uqail from Ibn
Shihab, he said: "At one point, the Prophet Muhammad had been together
with his companions while they discussed the virtues of the Prophets. Some say,
"Moses is Kaliimullah (the
person who was invited to speak directly with Allah SWT)." Some say,
"Isa (Jesus) is the Ruhullah
wakalimatuhu (the spirit of blowing from Allah SWT and created with His
sentence)." Some say: "Ibrahim (Abraham) is Khalilullah (beloved of Allah SWT). "When they discussed the
matter, he (Rasulullah SAW) said," Where is Ash Shahid bin Ash Shahid
(Yahya bin Zakaria), who always wears clothes from wool, eats from trees and is
very afraid against sin? "
Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated from Yahya bin Sa'id Al
Anshariy from Sa'id bin Al Musayyab, Ibn Al-'Ash had told me, that he had heard
from the Prophet Muhammad said: "Every child of Adam will come on the Day
of Judgment with sin except Yahya ibn Zakaria. "
Al-An'am verse 85:
وَزَكَرِيَّا
وَيَحۡيَىٰ وَعِيسَىٰ وَإِلۡيَاسَۖ كُلّٞ مِّنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ ٨٥
85. And Zechariah and John and Jesus and Elias - and all were of the righteous.
