Da'wah
of the Prophet Moses, who was accompanied by Prophet Aaron to Pharaoh and his
people, apparently there is no result. Pharaoh actually wanted to gather
sorcerers to fight Prophet Moses at the appointed time. Beginning Pharaoh sent
his messengers to search and gather sorcerers. Pharaoh gathered sorcerers in
large numbers to show his power and hoped to be able to defeat and fear Moses.
So
at the time of the feast at Dhuha at the venue of the competition, the
community gathered to watch the big match. Pharaoh and the royal officials were
in the best place to watch their sorcerers fight the miracle of Moses. Prophet
Moses who was accompanied by Prophet Aaron and the sorcerers of Pharaoh were
already in the arena to compete. Pharaoh promised great rewards for the
sorcerers if he was able to defeat the Prophet Moses and would be a close
person of Pharaoh. Pharaoh was proud because of the large number of sorcerers.
While the Prophet Moses was always protected by Allah SWT.
After
everything has gathered, the time for the match begins. The Pharaoh's sorcerers
offered Moses about who started first. Prophet Moses invited Pharaoh's
sorcerers to show their abilities first. They began to throw their ropes and
sticks. The objects they throw turn into a large number of snakes. Pharaoh was
increasingly proud to witness the abilities of his sorcerers and felt
optimistic. The people present were also amazed at the magic. With the will of
Allah SWT, the Prophet Moses also threw his staff and suddenly turned into a
very large snake. The large snake swallowed the snakes of the Pharaoh's
sorcerers without remainder. In an instant, the falsehood of the sorcerers had
vanished. Sorcerers were surprised by the victory of Prophet Moses. What was
shown by Prophet Moses was not from any magic as they learned from Satan. They
realized that Moses really brought the truth.
The
sorcerers immediately prostrated themselves humbly. They stated that they were
willing to follow the teachings of Prophet Moses. They declare faith in the God
the ruler of the universe, namely Allah SWT. They repent and realize that they
were once heretics. So this is the time for the sorcerers to take the right
path.
Pharaoh
was disappointed with the results of the match, apparently he lost. Pharaoh was
also angry at the defection that carried out by sorcerers who had repented. The
sorcerers no longer cared about Pharaoh. So Pharaoh threatened to cut the arms
and legs of the sorcerers in a cross (right hand and left foot or vice versa)
and they would be crucified at the base of the date palm tree. This is really a
threat beyond humanity. But the sorcerers were not at all afraid and remained
firm in their stance, they still believed in Allah SWT. For them, the torment
of Pharaoh was only a punishment of the world that was far below the torment of
Allah SWT. All dead humans will return to their God and believers will enjoy in
the hereafter. So the repentant sorcerers begged Allah SWT to be given patience
in facing the torment of the world and being die in a state of surrender to
Allah SWT.
Since
that event, there have been two groups in Egypt. The first is the followers of
Pharaoh and the second is the followers of Prophet Moses. The teachings of the
Prophet Moses are very clear, because all God's creatures are equally valued,
unlike the Pharaoh who behaved ruthlessly and cruelly.
The
following are the verses of the Holy Qur'an which tell the match of Prophet
Moses and Prophet Aaron against the sorcerers of Pharaoh.
Surah
Al-A'raf verses 113-126:
113. And the sorcerers came to Pharaoh. They said,
"Indeed for us is a reward if we are the predominant."
114. He said, "Yes, and, [moreover], you will
be among those made near [to me]."
115. They said, "O Moses, either you throw
[your staff], or we will be the ones to throw [first]."
116. He said, "Throw," and when they
threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck terror into them, and
they presented a great [feat of] magic.
117. And We inspired to Moses, "Throw your
staff," and at once it devoured what they were falsifying.
118. So the truth was established, and abolished
was what they were doing.
119. And Pharaoh and his people were overcome
right there and became debased.
120. And the sorcerers fell down in prostration
[to Allah].
121. They said, "We have believed in the Lord
of the worlds,
122. The Lord of Moses and Aaron."
123. Said Pharaoh, "You believed in him
before I gave you permission. Indeed, this is a conspiracy which you conspired
in the city to expel therefrom its people. But you are going to know.
124. I will surely cut off your hands and your
feet on opposite sides; then I will surely crucify you all."
125. They said, "Indeed, to our Lord we will
return.
126. And you do not resent us except because we
believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour upon us
patience and let us die as Muslims [in submission to You]."
Surah
Yunus verses 80-81:
80. So when the sorcerers came, Moses said to
them, "Throw down whatever you will throw."
81. And when they had thrown, Moses said,
"What you have brought is [only] magic. Indeed, Allah will expose its
worthlessness. Indeed, Allah does not amend the work of corrupters.
Surah
Thaha verses 60-76:
60. So Pharaoh went away, put together his plan,
and then came [to Moses].
61. Moses said to the sorcerers summoned by
Pharaoh, "Woe to you! Do not invent a lie against Allah or He will
exterminate you with a punishment; and he has failed who invents [such
falsehood]."
62. So they disputed over their affair among
themselves and concealed their private conversation.
63. They said, "Indeed, these are two sorcerers
who want to drive you out of your land with their magic and do away with your most
exemplary way.
64. So resolve upon your plan and then come
[forward] in line. And he has succeeded today who overcomes."
65. They said, "O Moses, either you throw or
we will be the first to throw."
66. He said, "Rather, you throw." And
suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were
moving [like snakes].
67. And he sensed within himself apprehension,
did Moses.
68. Allah said, "Fear not. Indeed, it is you
who are superior.
69. And throw what is in your right hand; it will
swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a
sorcerer, and the sorcerer will not succeed wherever he is."
70. So the sorcerers fell down in prostration.
They said, "We have believed in the Lord of Aaron and Moses."
71. [Pharaoh] said, "You believed him before
I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic. So I
will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will
crucify you on the trunks of palm trees, and you will surely know which of us
is more severe in [giving] punishment and more enduring."
72. They said, "Never will we prefer you
over what has come to us of clear proofs and [over] He who created us. So
decree whatever you are to decree. You can only decree for this worldly life.
73. Indeed, we have believed in our Lord that He
may forgive us our sins and what you compelled us [to do] of magic. And Allah
is better and more enduring."
74. Indeed, whoever comes to his Lord as a
criminal - indeed, for him is Hell; he will neither die therein nor live.
75. But whoever comes to Him as a believer having
done righteous deeds - for those will be the highest degrees [in position]:
76. Gardens of perpetual residence beneath which
rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. And that is the reward of one who
purifies himself.
Surah
Ash-Shu'ara verses 38-51:
38. So the sorcerers were assembled for the
appointment of a well-known day.
39. And it was said to the people, "Will you
congregate
40. That we might follow the sorcerers if they
are the predominant?"
41. And when the sorcerers arrived, they said to
Pharaoh, "Is there indeed for us a reward if we are the predominant?"
42. He said, "Yes, and indeed, you will then
be of those near [to me]."
43. Moses said to them, "Throw whatever you
will throw."
44. So they threw their ropes and their staffs
and said, "By the might of Pharaoh, indeed it is we who are
predominant."
45. Then Moses threw his staff, and at once it
devoured what they falsified.
46. So the sorcerers fell down in prostration [to
Allah].
47. They said, "We have believed in the Lord
of the worlds,
48. The Lord of Moses and Aaron."
49. [Pharaoh] said, "You believed Moses
before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you
magic, but you are going to know. I will surely cut off your hands and your
feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you all."
50. They said, "No harm. Indeed, to our Lord
we will return.
51. Indeed, we aspire that our Lord will forgive
us our sins because we were the first of the believers."
