Moses
had traveled a long distance since leaving Egypt. After a while, Moses arrived
in the country of Madyan. Moses felt tired and hungry, he decided to rest. At
that time, Moses saw people who were swarming around the water source to drink
their livestock. Behind the crowd were two girls who had difficulty giving
their animals to drink. Moses approached the two girls and helped them to fetch
water. The two girls got what they needed. So Moses returned to take shelter.
Moses prayed to God so he could get help.
Surah Al-Qashash verses 23-24:
23. And when he came to the well of Madyan, he
found there a crowd of people watering [their flocks], and he found aside from
them two women driving back [their flocks]. He said, "What is your
circumstance?" They said, "We do not water until the shepherds
dispatch [their flocks]; and our father is an old man."
24. So he watered [their flocks] for them; then he
went back to the shade and said, "My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good
You would send down to me, in need."
The
two girls told their experience to their father's (according to some story, the
father was Shu'aib). Then, the girls's father ordered his daughters to invite
Moses to their home. One of the two girls walked over to Moses. The girl said
that her father invited Moses to their home to repay the kindness that Moses
had done. Musa was grateful for his wish. With pleasure, Moses accepted the invitation
and went to the girls' father's house.
Moses
was welcomed by the father of the girls when they arrived at their home. The
father was pleased with Moses' personality. Moses told about him and the
various events he experienced until he reached the land of Madyan. The father
said that Moses was safe and secure from those who wanted to arrest him. One of
the girls said to her father that Moses would work for them, because Moses was
a strong and trustworthy person. The father of the girls also intended to marry
Moses with one of his daughters. The condition is that Moses had to graze
livestock belonging to the girls's father for eight years. Moses agreed and was
even able to fulfill it into ten years.
Surah Al-Qashash verses 25-28:
25. Then one of the two women came to him walking
with shyness. She said, "Indeed, my father invites you that he may reward
you for having watered for us." So when he came to him and related to him
the story, he said, "Fear not. You have escaped from the wrongdoing
people."
26. One of the women said, "O my father,
hire him. Indeed, the best one you can hire is the strong and the
trustworthy."
27. He said, "Indeed, I wish to wed you one
of these, my two daughters, on [the condition] that you serve me for eight
years; but if you complete ten, it will be [as a favor] from you. And I do not
wish to put you in difficulty. You will find me, if Allah wills, from among the
righteous."
28. [Moses] said, "That is [established]
between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I complete - there is no
injustice to me, and Allah, over what we say, is Witness."
Moses
did his work patiently and diligently. During this time the girls father saw
that Moses was truly a young man who was honest, strong, and trustworthy. It is
not wrong if Moses was made a son-in-law. After the agreement period was over,
Moses married and lived happily with his wife. Moses was able to be a good
protector for his wife.
