The issue of global warming, the
environment, and the energy crisis are things that are often discussed and
feared in modern times. These three issues are actually interrelated with each
other. These three issues make people try to preserve the environment, reduce
carbon emissions, and look for various alternative energy to replace fossil
energy which is decreasingly for human needs. One of the efforts made by humans
to create a beautiful environment is to reduce the use of fossil energy. One
simple and widely done method is to utilize available energy resources that can
be updated, including sunlight.
Natural light from the sun has a
direct role in creating a sustainable environment. By using natural light for
lighting in buildings when the sun is visible, it can reduce the use of
electrical energy which is commonly used for power sources of artificial
lighting equipment, namely lamps. Fossil fuel power plants, such as coal for
steam power plants have a negative impact on the environment because exhaust
gases are harmful to the environment. If its use can be reduced, then efforts
to create a good environment can be realized, many or few. The quality of the
environment will increase so it is safe and comfortable for the life of living
things, especially humans. Non-fossil power plants such as hydropower and wind
do not cause exhaust gases. But it would be nice if it is not wasteful in the
use of electrical energy by utilizing natural lighting. If you can make a
building with a good natural lighting arrangement then you don't need to turn
on the lights and electricity can be used for other needs that do have to use
electricity.
The Betterpad-Ray (Benteng Terpadu
Raya / Great Integrated Fortress "Mural Wall") model is designed to be able to use sunlight
as well as lighting in the room when the sun is visible, so it can reduce the
waste of electrical energy for lights because there are quite a lot of
buildings in one complex. All buildings in Betterpad-Ray will later be used for
various uses and important activities so that it requires lighting both day and
night. During the day, when a lot of activity is done, natural lighting is very
important so that activities can be done well without using lights. All
buildings will be designed so that sunlight can enter the room but the building
remains safe according to its use. Pendapa Peradaban (Civilization Pavilion) is
one example of a large hall that makes good use of sunlight. Many sunlight can
enter inside as lighting because most parts of the pendapa are not covered by
walls. Betterpad-Ray Main Building around a box with an elongated structure and
not too wide so that all parts can be exposed to sunlight. The Shahada Mosque
(Masjid Syahadat) also has wide windows that make it easy to entered by
sunlight.
Indeed the concept of natural
lighting as in the Betterpad-Ray model is not new. This model only learns and
imitates traditional designs designed by the Indonesian people since ancient
times that use sunlight as lighting well. But today, the development of
artificial light technology and dependence on fossil energy has brought
dependence on electric lights. Awareness to protect the environment from the
adverse effects of modern technology makes natural lighting re-utilized for
morning to evening.
The position of Indonesia crossed by
the equator gives a big advantage. The availability of sunlight is relatively
stable throughout the year in Indonesia. If this potential is used properly,
the effort that looks simple can have a big impact on the environment. Sunlight
as an abundant energy source contributes greatly to environmental
sustainability. It takes high awareness and earnest effort to make it happen.
This has become the responsibility of everyone to care for the environment.
The use of sunlight as lighting the
building space by creating access to various building rooms is one simple step
but requires careful design considerations. The thing that must be considered
is the function of the building, the activities carried out, and the expected
design. Consideration must be taken correctly and carefully so that the
building is not only environmentally friendly, but also has a strong character
and identity. Without awareness of the environment, no matter how beautiful the
shape of the building will only satisfy visual needs.
